Fall Allergies in Pets: What to Watch For and How to Help

August 26, 2024

As the leaves change color and the weather cools, fall can be a beautiful time of year—but it can also bring seasonal allergies for our pets. Just like humans, dogs and cats can suffer from allergies triggered by pollen, mold, and other environmental factors. Here’s what to watch for and how to help your furry friend through the season.

Common Symptoms of Fall Allergies in Pets:

  • Itchy Skin: Excessive scratching, biting, or licking of the skin can be a sign of allergies.
  • Red or Inflamed Skin: Look for areas that are red, swollen, or irritated.
  • Ear Infections: Pets with allergies are more prone to ear infections, so keep an eye out for head shaking or ear scratching.
  • Watery Eyes or Runny Nose: Just like us, pets can have watery eyes and a runny nose from allergies.
  • Sneezing and Coughing: Frequent sneezing or coughing can also be an indicator of seasonal allergies.

How to Help Your Pet:

  1. Keep Your Home Clean: Regularly vacuum your home and wash your pet's bedding to reduce allergens.
  2. Bathing and Grooming: Bathing your pet with hypoallergenic shampoo can help remove allergens from their coat and soothe irritated skin. Regular grooming also helps to keep their fur and skin healthy.
  3. Dietary Supplements: Omega-3 fatty acids can help reduce inflammation and improve your pet's skin condition.
  4. Limit Outdoor Time: During high-pollen days, try to limit your pet's time outdoors, especially in the early morning and late evening when pollen counts are highest.
  5. Consult Your Veterinarian: If your pet’s symptoms persist, consult your vet. They may recommend antihistamines, allergy shots, or other treatments.

By staying vigilant and taking a few proactive steps, you can help your pet stay comfortable and healthy through the fall allergy season.
