Top Pet Safety Tips for Chicago’s Cold Months

October 28, 2024

As temperatures drop, it’s important to consider your pet’s comfort and safety during the chilly Chicago months. Here are essential tips for keeping your pets safe as we head into winter:

  • Bundle Up for Walks: Invest in warm, well-fitted coats or sweaters, especially for small breeds or pets with short fur. Layers are essential for both humans and pets on cold days!
  • Mind Their Paws: Salt, snow, and ice can be tough on paw pads, potentially causing cracks or burns. Use paw balm before walks, and consider dog booties to keep their feet protected. Rinse and dry their paws after walks to remove salt and ice melt.
  • Watch Out for Frostbite: Frostbite is a real risk, especially on your pet’s ears, tail, and toes. Avoid exposing your pet to freezing temperatures for too long. Limit outdoor time, particularly on extremely cold days.
  • Beware of Antifreeze: Antifreeze can be fatal if ingested. Clean up spills immediately and keep all chemicals stored securely out of reach. Consider pet-safe antifreeze options if you’re working around your garage.
  • Be Careful with Heaters: Pets may be drawn to heaters or fireplaces for warmth. Place barriers around heat sources to prevent burns, and avoid leaving space heaters unattended.
  • Adjust Feeding and Activity Levels: Cold weather can increase a pet’s caloric needs if they’re still getting plenty of exercise. However, for more indoor-focused pets, maintain their usual feeding routine to avoid weight gain.

With a few adjustments, you can keep your pet cozy and healthy even on Chicago’s coldest days.
