What To Know Before Boarding Your Dog

December 15, 2023

Boarding your fur-baby can be a stressful and scary time, especially if you’re a new pet parent. Often times, it is easier and more cost effective to leave them with a friend or family member, but that isn’t always an option. What are some things you should know before choosing the right pet hotel for your pup?

1). Visit the pet hotel, resort, or kennel first. This is very important for several reasons. You want to make sure you feel comfortable while you are away so this is the time to meet the staff, ask any questions you may have, meet other pet parents, etc. Make sure you can see the entire facility. Ask what is behind closed doors, etc. It’s always great to show up unannounced (without an appointment) so you can have a better understanding of how the facility operates. Is the facility clean and well-ventilated?

2). What accommodations for your pup are important to you? Some things to look for are playtime options. Will your pup get to play either with other pups or humans while he/she is there or will they be confined to a cage, kennel, or suite? Does this place offer webcams, swimming, treat options, etc?

3). What will my pup’s day look like? Can they stick to their feeding and nap schedule?

4). How will I know how my pup is doing during their stay? Are updates sent? Can I call in and check?

5). What vaccinations are required?

6). What is their protocol in the event of an emergency?

7). Do they offer 24 hour care? You will want to make sure there is always someone at the facility in the event of an emergency.

8). Can I bring my pup’s own food, toys, treats, etc?

Don’t ever refrain from asking questions. Ask as many questions as you need to in order to understand the operation of the facility.
