We shared some great ideas last week for activities to keep your pup busy and entertained on cold days when they are stuck indoors. If you missed that post, you can check it out HERE!
One of the ideas that we got a HUGE response from was how to make your own KONG, toy or bone stuffing for long lasting and delicious frozen treats for fido!
We suggested using a KONG, hollowed out marrow bone, or stuffable chew toy to fill with your dog’s favorite goodies and store in the freezer, to keep your pup occupied indoors during the cold temps!
We thought we would share some really great recipes for you to try out as well. You can of course feel free to pick and choose items based on what your dog loves.
Two important tips to always remember are 1) NEVER use or feed a cooked bone which can splinter and cause intestinal issues for your pet and 2) If you are using human food ingredients in your recipes, always be sure the foods you are using are safe for pets to ingest. If you are not sure whether or not a particular ingredient is safe, check this list from the ASPCA before getting started.
Now it’s time to start mixing up some good stuff!
Base ingredient ideas: Canned or wet dog food, soft raw dog food patties or medallions, applesauce, peanut butter, baby food, cooked oatmeal, cooked beef, velveeta, cheez whiz or other soft cheese, cooked eggs, cooked pasta noodles, yogurt, cream cheese, canned pumpkin, honey, mashed potatoes, tuna, chicken broth, smashed bananas or anything else your dog loves that will freeze 🙂
Add in items: Any kind of small dog treats or broken up larger treats, raw or cooked fruits or veggies, cooked rice, dry cereal, cooked beef or chicken, dried fruit, and basically any mix in item that your dog loves and that is safe for them to eat.
Get creative and mix the ingredients together in a large bowl, place KONG’s or bones open end up on a pan or piece of wax paper, fill them with the mixture, and then place in a large gallon size freezer bag and pop in the freezer for a few hours!
